March 20th, 2020
BALTIMORE, MD, March 19, 2020 – In response to COVID-19, today the Hampden Village Merchants Association announced the availability of free same-day home delivery. With the number of Baltimoreans working from home as well as those who are at-risk or self-isolating, the HVMA is working to provide both daily necessities and niceties for those cloistered at home. The service will begin on Monday, March 23rd.
We hope to be competitive with services like Amazon,“ said Libby Francis Baxter, owner of The Modest Florist and organizer of the delivery service. She continued, “We will be delivering customers’ orders within a 4 hour window and likely even faster!” Customers contact their favorite participating retailer to place orders directly either online, by phone, or by social media. Orders placed by 12 noon will be delivered between 2 PM and 6 PM that day to residences within Baltimore city.

Covid -19 Hours and Closures

March 17th, 2020
Things are rapidly changing and even by the time this is posted, closure information may have already changed. So if there is a specific Hampden Village Merchants Association business you are interested in, we suggest visiting their website, their social media or calling them. You can look them up on this site.

We have received numerous messages from concerned residents asking how to support our area businesses, and the HMVA is grateful for the concern and interest.

If you wish to continue to support local businesses, we recommend you visit those who have websites and order online. Even if it is purchasing a gift card for yourself to use later, every bit goes a long way when a business no longer has a revenue stream. Many local eateries are offering to-go and carryout options, so we also recommend you take advantage of that as well – while keeping your distance from others.

10 Things You Need to See in Charming Baltimore

October 15th, 2019

Hampden was picked as one of the 10 Things You Need to See by USA TODAY.

“Home to some of Baltimore’s most well-known annual celebrations, including HONfest (think beehive hairdos and cat-eye glasses), Hampdenfest, the Mayor’s Christmas Parade and the “Miracle on 34th Street” holiday lights display, this quirky neighborhood is a must-visit.

Once a 19th century blue collar mill town, Hampden is now a hipster community filled with indie shops and restaurants. Walk along 36th Street, a.k.a. “The Avenue,” to buy trendy footwear and artisan chocolates at Ma Petite Shoe and browse the well-curated shelves of Atomic Books, where native son John Waters picks up his fan mail.

Take a break for sophisticated comfort food – crab cakes, of course – at The Food Market and save room for a scoop of Old Bay caramel or Otterbein sugar cookie ice cream at The Charmery.”

Why Baltimore Is One of the Most Exciting U.S. Cities Right Now

March 20th, 2017

“The distinctive neighborhood of Hampden, a blue-collar enclave turned hipster hangout, has a treasure trove of independent boutiques peddling everything from kitsch to high fashion. Bazaar is a must-see ode to the bizarre; its shelves are chock-full of medical antiques, taxidermy, and even seance candles. At Hunting Ground, housed in a converted church, shoppers will find vintage apparel alongside boho-chic garb by emerging local designers. Stocked with twee, one-of-a-kind housewares and gifts, Trohv is considered one of the city’s best home goods stores. Avid readers (and everyone, really) should seek out Atomic Books, a legendary store that added a comic book–themed beer bar.”   – Architectural Digest

Best of Baltimore: Hampden

March 23rd, 2012

“For most of its life, Hampden (the “p” is silent) was an isolated town within a city. Its main street and modest housing catered to workers in textile mills in the adjacent Jones Falls Valley. After that industry went south, Hampden found new appeal among those seeking city living without the ballooning prices of waterside neighborhoods. To put it another way, people with MBAs moved to the harborside neighborhoods; those with degrees in philosophy or art history and more tattoos than neckties ended up in Hampden.

Today Hampden has an arty mix of residents and businesses. Its commercial strip—officially 36th Street, though called “the Avenue”—has junk shops, vinyl-record sellers, artist-run craft stores, high-end houseware purveyors, and gift boutiques. Dive bars and wine bars, diners and espresso outlets are strung along it. A merchants association works hard to keep it as local as possible. So no Starbucks.”

Road Work on the Avenue

July 13th, 2011

Due to some street construction on the Avenue for the next few weeks, parking is unavailable during most of the day from Falls Rd to Elm. But since the regional parking meters are bagged and inaccessible, after 5pm, when road work for the day is done, parking on those blocks will be free for the rest of the evening.

This is only for regional parking meters. Any free standing meters that are not covered will still apply until 6pm, Monday through Saturday.

Neighborhoods – Baltimore Magazine

April 6th, 2011

Baltimore Magazine‘s annual Neighborhoods Issue’s Hampden section, written by Benn Ray, co-owner of Atomic Books. Insider picks collected by Baltimore Magazine.

“It happens every week. A group of folks stops in my store and says, ‘I wish we had a neighborhood like this where I live.’

But that isn’t the part that gets me. What makes me proud of Hampden are the answers I get when I ask where they are from. Answers like ‘New York.’ ‘Washington.’ ‘San Francisco.’ ‘Chicago.’

What these folks covet is Hampden’s main street. ‘The Avenue,’ which is nearly devoid of chain stores, instead favoring individually owned shops and boutiques staffed and managed by city residents who would be priced out in those other cities.

They are referring to Hampden’s unique character that comes from a micro-melting pot of lifelong residents and young artists and professionals – a mutually beneficial cohabitation of people of various socioeconomic backgrounds. They are referring to the real possibility that the person who just served them a meal or a drink at  a local bar or retaurant is, more likely than not, in a band that just got a great review on NPR or

It’s the envy of others that keeps me from taking for granted what a truly unique and precious Baltimore City neighborhood Hampden is.”

Spro in the WashPo

April 6th, 2011

Here’s a great profile piece on Jay Caragay, owner of Spro, in Hampden, in The Washington Post.

“The latest trend in independent coffee shops — such as Rue’s Volta Coffee and Tea in Gainesville, Fla., WTF in Brooklyn, Barista in Portland, Ore., Peregrine in the District — is coffee ground and brewed to order, using a variety of manual brewing methods. But Spro takes coffee geekdom to new heights.”

Welcome to the New Site!

May 28th, 2010

We’re still working on updating the site but there’s always something new happening in Hampden so actually…the updating never ends!

A recent visit from Chicago’s Time Out has this nice travel write up about Baltimore and he loved us best:

“But my hands-down favorite Baltimore outing goes to Hampden, an eclectic strip of wine bars, junk stores and art galleries peddling UFO art and other nonesuch. Here I discovered Curbside Cafe, a new food truck offering fancy burritos. I bought a T-shirt at Red Tree (921 W 36th St, 410-366-3456), a chic home-furnishing and tchotchkes store vaunting hand-crafted treasures by local artists, and then ducked into Golden West Cafe (1105 W 36th St, 410-889-8991), an organic breakfast joint with a dive bar in the back. My last stop for the night was Rocket to Venus (3360 Chestnut Ave, 410-235-7887), a sprawling dive bar so jammed with hipsters in skinny jeans that it’s colloquially known as Pocket to Penis. It was here that I asked a couple of tattooed ladies where I could find more quirky Baltimore. They rolled their eyes at me as if to say, ‘Oh, please, what isn’t quirky?’”
